Microsoft Encourages Corporations, Users to Stop Using IE6

February 03, 2010, 10:10:33 AM by MetalMusicMan in Tech

http://www.metalmusicman.com/files/pictures/ie6die.jpg
For crying out loud, just disable the thing, Microsoft.  IE6 is almost 10 years old and was never a good browser to begin with.  Sadly, it still has a rather large market share because so many companies still use it... I don't think that there is any excuse for that at this point.  There hasn't been a compatibility issue stemmed from NOT using IE6 in over 5 years... what are we holding on for, guys!?  The problem is that there are too many lazy corporations who don't want to spend the small amount of time / money it takes to install a FREE update for Windows XP like Service Pack 3 or Internet Explorer 8.

I reformat and configure 3 to 5 PC's a week at my job, for the school that I work for. Sadly, we still have a lot of older XP machines, but it stops there.  We don't order new systems and then downgrade them to XP / IE6... that would be ludicrous--yet, that is exactly what a lot of companies still do.

As for our existing XP machines, if I wasn't upgrading every single one of them to SP3 / IE8, I wouldn't be able to look myself in the eye. How lazy and idiotically stubborn can you possibly be if you, as an IT professional, are allowing--no, recommending that your users interact with 10 year old technology on a daily basis?

Upgrade, you idiots! Stop using IE6! Stop using Windows XP pre-Service Pack 3! Heck, stop using XP all together!

It's been over eight years since Internet Explorer 6 was released (August 2001) and over three years since Internet Explorer 7 was released (October 2006). However, many IT departments cling to the stale browsers, rather than upgrading to Internet Explorer 8, which was released last March.  Justifications for not upgrading are diverse and include potential compatibility issues with applications, the cost in manpower hours to switch to the new browser, and the potential expense of buying new tools to manage the newer browser.

Writes Microsoft, "That said, we remain vigilant about this threat evolving and want to be sure our customers take appropriate action to protect themselves. That is why we continue to recommend that customers using IE6 or IE7, upgrade to IE8 as soon as possible to benefit from the improved security protections it offers. Customers who are using Windows XP SP2 should be sure to upgrade to both IE8 and enable Data Execution Protection (DEP), or upgrade to Windows XP SP3 which enables DEP by default, as soon as possible."

The Alienware Net-Game-Lap-Note-Book for $1000

January 26, 2010, 10:11:05 AM by Uneven Pavement in Tech

http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gadgetlab/2010/01/dell-1-2.jpg
I am incredibly intrigued by this thing.  I wouldn't spend my money on it without a hands-on demo, but when I started thinking about it, it actually makes a lot of sense.  The Alienware M11X is an 11.6" gaming laptop.  Yeah... 11 inches.  I was almost tempted to call it an Alienware netbook but with a GT35M from Nvidia inside it's really just a gaming laptop with a small screen.  The coolest thing about it is the ability to switch from the GT35M to the internal graphics chip to conserve battery power when you aren't gaming.

When I asked Alex Gruzen, Dell’s VP of consumer products, if you had to restart the machine to change modes he smiled. “No, you just hit a switch,” he told me, “it takes about two seconds.”

It is built for mobility...and gaming... which are two adjectives you don't often hear about the same unit.  Gaming laptops are usually just powerful "desktop-replacement" laptops whose batteries die the second you unplug them (they also usually cost between $1500-$2000).  I feel like this is actually something I would get a lot of use out of and the price is reasonable.

I love LAN'ing.  It is a dying idea though.  We are getting to the point where games don't even support it anymore.  Some people say it's no longer necessary with such high-speed internet connections because you can just setup private servers and go from there.  But I don't think anything can replace competing with friends in the same room... it's just more fun.  I wish we LAN'ed more often, but with 26" monitors, PC's that weigh anywhere from 50-100 lbs, the wiring and rewiring everytime you get home... if you aren't LAN'ing for a week it just doesn't seem worth it.  I feel like something like this could make it more feasable.

What do you think?

Razer Imperator hits the market

January 23, 2010, 06:43:51 PM by MetalMusicMan in Tech

Razer's latest mouse, the Imperator, has adjustable side buttons to make it more comfortable depending on how you grip it.  It's designed for standard hand-grip or finger-tip-grip users in mind, and has a 5600dpi laser sensor.  The mouse is an ergonomic, right handed-only design.  Generally, I don't like right handed-only mice, because they make me hold the mouse in such a comfortable position that I find it difficult to be precise or fast in games.  It looks like a good mouse though, so if you are in need of a new one, keep this in mind.

The Imperator actually seems a bit similar to the "tried and true" Logitech design, which is a somewhat surprisingly "normal" design for Razer, compared to their usual mice.

Razer Goliathus Mousepad Review

December 26, 2009, 08:44:00 PM by MetalMusicMan in Tech

I've been using this pad for almost a year now, I have the "control" edition in medium size and I really love it.  This video gives you a good idea of the differences between the two versions (speed / control) and also showcases the various sizes.  The fact that it came in different sizes is one of the main reasons that I wanted it, because so many "gaming" mouspads are just WAY TOO BIG.  At any rate, I would have already recommended my Control Goliathus pad to anyone, but this video makes it even easier to do that Smiley

Android Continued...

November 06, 2009, 04:10:23 PM by Uneven Pavement in Tech

A year ago, I started the Android discussion with a post regarding the T-Mobile G1 and what was then an introduction to the Android OS.  With the launch of the recent 2.0 release, I'd like to reopen that discussion and see what everone's experience has been so far with Android.  Ever used it?  What did you think?  What did you not like?  Do you own an android phone?  Killer apps?  etc.

I'll kick things off with an introduction to the new user features of Android 2.0 which was released last week I believe.

Android 2.0 New User Features

Contacts and Accounts
•Multiple accounts can be added to a device for email and contact synchronization, including Exchange accounts. (Handset manufacturers can choose whether to include Exchange support in their devices.)
•Developers can create sync adapters that provide synchronization with additional data sources.
•Quick Contact for Android provides instant access to a contact's information and communication modes. For example, a user can tap a contact photo and select to call, SMS, or email the person. Other applications such as Email, Messaging, and Calendar can also reveal the Quick Contact widget when you touch a contact photo or status icon.

Email
•Exchange support.     Finally!!!
•Combined inbox to browse email from multiple accounts in one page.

Messaging
•Search functionality for all saved SMS and MMS messages.     Surprisingly useful!
•Auto delete the oldest messages in a conversation when a defined limit is reached.

Camera
•Built-in flash support
•Digital zoom     WIN!
•Scene mode
•White balance     MORE WIN!
•Color effect
•Macro focus

Android virtual keyboard
•An improved keyboard layout to makes it easier to hit the correct characters and improve typing speed.     Thank you!
•The framework's multi-touch support ensures that key presses aren't missed while typing rapidly with two fingers.
•A smarter dictionary learns from word usage and automatically includes contact names as suggestions.     Always good.

Browser
•Refreshed UI with actionable browser URL bar enables users to directly tap the address bar for instant searches and navigation.
•Bookmarks with web page thumbnails.     Sweet!
•Support for double-tap zoom.
•Support for HTML5:
◦Database API support, for client-side databases using SQL.
◦Application cache support, for offline applications.
◦Geolocation API support, to provide location information about the device.
◦<video> tag support in fullscreen mode.

Calendar
•Agenda view provides infinite scrolling.
•Events indicate the attending status for each invitee.
•Invite new guests to events.

I've had my G1 for about a year now and I still find new cool things every day.  Here is my latest discovery...

This is not an Android specific service.  But Android contains a Google Voice app for easy/instant access to its most POWERFUL feature...visual voicemail.  Google Voice is currently an "Invite Only" product, kind of like Gmail started out and is available in two different ways.  You can sign up using your current mobile number or you can request a new number from google.

http://www.zatznotfunny.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/google-voice-android1.jpg
I hate voicemail.  I hate it.  I always have.  In my voicemail message I used to tell people that if they needed to get a hold of me they should probably just send me a text.  But I don't have to do that anymore because instead of my unanswered calls going to my T-Mobile voicemail, now they are sent to my google voice voicemail.  Google Voice transcribes the voicemail message into text and then I am notified by my android app that I have a new message.  I can then just read the voicemail like a text, skip to any part of the message that is unintelligible, or delete instantly if necessary.  No calling into a voicemail box, listening to the menu options, listening to the person ramble on etc.  Just quick and easy.

For those of you without Android phones.  This service will can also send you a text or email of the transcription, however you will still have to call into a voicemail box if you want to hear the actual message.  Or if your phone has internet access you can listen to the message online at your google voice homepage.  It's a pretty awesome service.

Google Voice has additional features that are of little use to me but may be awesome for other people including:  International calling, Free SMS, Conference calling, Options for recording calls, custom greetings for callers (i.e. when Will calls me I can have a personalized message that says "Will, you are a poopface, but leave a message anyway.), as well as options for blocking calls.

Click here to request an invite.
