i dont usually agree with most of the anti-college sentiment you have. and this is one of those cases. youre always going to have dumbasses doing dumbassery, but I got a good bit out of my college education. My friend who graduated with a business degree got a bit less than i did. Our friend who just graduated in Engineering is facing promising prospects and will probably do better than both of us.

my wife is about to graduate with her accounting degree, will be getting her CPA soonish, and will most likely be supporting my underachiever ass for the rest of my life. GO COLLEGE!!! (for other people) all that said, i agree that college is idiotic. but our society is idiotic, so one often must do idiotic things to not only survive but prosper in it. the only other option is defy cultural norms, rebel against the consumerist money system and go live in the woods. Which is what i would be doing if i wasn't married. so she has to, as mentioned before, support my ass.

thats exactly how i feel about college .__. i mean yeah there are the guys who study their asses off and get into MIT and graduate in 2 years and get a job as a supervisor at Boeing making 100k+ salary at the age of 20. i can't say i haven't actually used anything i learned in college for anything, but at the same time, i really don't use most of it :\ all the majors seem kinda iffy too, some make money, others don't... it all seems like a trap... i agree with anarkos, we should all just fly to russia and fucking live in the woods xD

30 minutes? lol had one class, all we did was an introduction, then left. took me longer to walk to and from school than it did to actually be in class. Im suuuuuper sad this semester because i just transfered from poli sci into english which means i have to do first year english courses. it also means i dont have many electives left to take as i already have a lot of credits from 2 years of poli sci, so i only have 3 classes per semester this year. second semester should be fun though, im doing digital art, and english classes for comics/graphic novels, and childrens literature. yes this is a joke degree. its easy and poli sci was driving me crazy. i just want to be done this degree so i can start my education one.

Every time that happened to me, I felt joyed yet cheated, haha. i dont usually agree with most of the anti-college sentiment you have. and this is one of those cases. youre always going to have dumbasses doing dumbassery, but I got a good bit out of my college education. The point isn't "hurr hurr you're dumb for going to college". The point is that it doesn't really matter for most every field. I very much ENJOYED my Earth Science and Creative Writing classes... I would have loved to be able to finish them and take more classes... but what good would that ever do me? It's a constant drain of TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars and it ultimately has no relation to anything. You go to college to do whatever you want and get a piece of paper that-- for some reason-- entitles you to more money. Yes, you will absolutely LEARN things along the way-- but how much of it applies to your job? Almost none of it-- and isn't the POINT to get a job related to your studies? Look at yourself; you have a literary degree and you work at a pharmacy... not bashing, I'm no better. It's what everyone does, and that's why it's dumb. Unless of course, you're planning on being a doctor or a lawyer or something. all that said, i agree that college is idiotic. but our society is idiotic, so one often must do idiotic things to not only survive but prosper in it. the only other option is defy cultural norms, rebel against the consumerist money system and go live in the woods. Oh Anark, how I love you. thats exactly how i feel about college .__. i mean yeah there are the guys who study their asses off and get into MIT and graduate in 2 years and get a job as a supervisor at Boeing making 100k+ salary at the age of 20. i can't say i haven't actually used anything i learned in college for anything, but at the same time, i really don't use most of it :\ all the majors seem kinda iffy too, some make money, others don't... it all seems like a trap... i agree with anarkos, we should all just fly to russia and fucking live in the woods xD

The overgeneralization is overgeneralized. I knew the field I wanted to get into and knew a fair bit about it before getting into college so the first year was a joke, but the structure and next couple of years was beneficial. Every time I applied for a job they were looking for 3rd party validation that I knew what I claimed I did, so I had to take courses and get certifications proving it. I used to resist this and feel resent, but looking at it from the other perspective is there really another way? I don't make a lot of money, enough for me and my family to keep our head above water, but I like what I do. A university degree in whatever holds more value then a college degree in whatever, but a college degree in your field of interest will give you more current skills then a university degree in your field of interest.... That's the part I can't quite get.

I think he's saying a university degree is worth more but teaches you less useful stuff, and a college degree teaches you more useful stuff but is worth less.
Quite the paradox.

Correct. It has to do with how dynamic a college can be versus a university. For things like art history it might not matter that much, but in the field of computer science it sure matters a lot.

I always looked at my degree as one way to build a portfolio. Thats what my college degree experience was: a bunch of work-shopping my writing and my classmates. After I did my internship in publishing, I knew I wasn't going to find a career (at least right now in my life) that would interest me. My degree (albeit expensive) was for my own personal benefit.
which is why I'm glad I didn't do what a lot of people are doing and getting a hurdehurhur business degree and then doing absolutely nothing with it. yay debt

LMao my mom just got offered and accepted a job from the department of defense teaching at the american high school in seoul, south korea because she had a masters (so basically the school for the kids of the longer term military types in SK).
Unsurprisingly, DOD benefits and pay are really good, even up to paying like 3k+ a month for a nice apartment in the city.
