I've always contended that chivalry and feminism are terrible ideas, but it's nice to hear it from someone as well spoken as this woman. I could write an entire article on my thoughts on the subject, and probably should at some point, but I'm feeling lazy as usual lately so I'll just link this awesome video from GirlWritesWhat

Did we watch a different video or something will? She's not knocking the concept of chivalry at all really, she's just calling modern ultra feminists out on being shitty stupid hypocrites essentially, which I totally agree with because they are.
Oh they want equal rights and equal pay and equal blah blah ok well maybe they should be expected to do equally dangerous and physically exhausting work which in most cases is performed by men. God modern hyper-feminism can be truly awful.

She says that chivalry as much a problem as uber feminism... so yes I think you misinterpreted it or something.

I'm pretty sure what she was saying that the feminist exploitation of chivalry is the problem, not chivalry itself.

No. Chivalry IS feminist exploitation. You can't believe in equal rights for women AND have chivalry. They're mutually exclusive.

I watched this last night while Ironing my shirts and after putting my kids to bed, and although she made a lot of good points, she spawned a differing theory in my head. Have you ever noticed that most species have the male be the more physically attractive species? Lions have their manes, Birds have the males being the most colourful and ones with the best dance moves, etc... but in Humans it's the women that are the most physically attractive.
I put forward that it is genetically imprinted within us that the male human lures women with his ability to provide. We are more cognitive beings then other animals, and our flashiness is in the ability to provide food, clothes, shelter, and comfort in that order. That is where Chivalry comes from; an ancient mating ritual which still goes on today.
My brother in-law had a discussion with his female co-workers in which they stated that the man must pay for the first 3 dates. One girl even claimed that when she was on a first date and the man asked if it was cool to split the bill at the begining of the meal, she excused herself to the washroom and never came back. When questioned what the man got in return, the only response they could think up was their company. An extreme case to be certain and shallow women for sure, but it illustrates the point.
As to the rant she made about treating children differently based on sex, well that's her own tainted view of things bleeding through and in no way representative of all parents. I suspect that she had a daughter first and then a son and that it is more a case that you dote over the first and the next you are more prepared for the harsh reality that is the world and the things that happen to little helpless children.
As far as women and children first, I certainly see the need if they are mothers. A man is reduced to a provider and the mother runs the house in the typical role. Some times that is reversed and that is statisticaly the exception to the rule, so when a firefighter has to make a snap decision the assumption would prove correct most of the time.
