Ill Niño - Dead New World
I just downloaded this about an hour ago, and man, is it awesome!
Ill Niño's last effort,
Enigma, was a good album, but suffered from a bit of a "tried and true" formula. A great album, but after 4 previous records, their sound was in need of a little reworking. The band's latest effort,
Dead New World, is just what was needed, and the album is stellar. Their sound has been overhauled, but is still familiar to Ill Niño fans.
The verses have Christian using a new, growlier scream, the guitars chug harder, and the choruses are as infectious as ever. The band seems to have gotten harder and softer at the same time, which of course fits them perfectly. Christian's new, growlier screaming is, at times, reminiscent of Brandon from Bleeding Through on his
Sorrows side-project. This is most definitely a good thing, as Christian retains his uniquely-awesome vocals while adding a new dimension to them.
Pretty much every track was fantastic, with the only standout "bad" track being their cover of The Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet with Butterfly Wings". The cover isn't bad, but it sounds forced and doesn't match the new sound that the rest of the album has. Barring that exception, the rest of the album is absolutely phenominal, it's catchy, fresh, and ass-kicking.
The band produced the album themselves and their work really shines through on it; a great reminder of why Ill Niño is one of my favorite bands and one of the definitive bands of the genre.
