I really liked Eat Me, Drink Me, which Manson released in 2007.  I think it's probably my favorite Manson album besides Mechanical Animals, so I was excited when I found out about his latest release, The High End of Low.  Despite the negativity I have heard about this release, I downloaded it from AmazonMP3 anyway.

Review: Marilyn Manson - The High End of Low
This effort shows Manson drifting back to his industrial-esque, glamorous sound, away from the under produced and dirty sound of Eat Me, Drink Me.  The venture back to familiar territory is not without innovation, though; the best tracks include a mixture of acoustics and electronic samples, played over dark and depressed lyrics.  Manson is at his best when he hates himself and his lover, rather than when he is just trying to be shocking.

There are a few very enjoyable songs with good promise, such as the opening track "Devour" and others including "Four Rusted Horses", "Into the Fire", and the final track, "15".  I really liked these tracks, especially "15".

The rest of the CD seems to be a confused mix of repetition and distortion, however... I'm not really sure what he was going for on some of the tracks, such as "I want to kill you like they do in the Movies", which runs on for 9+ minutes and never really goes anywhere...

Perhaps I just haven't adjusted to this style yet, I'm not sure.  I know that Eat Me, Drink Me caught my ear immediately, though, despite the fact that the album was spurned by a lot of people for reasons that I can't begin to guess at... I've never been able to figure out why since it is clearly one of his best and most adventurous albums.

Nonetheless, I can't say that The High End of Low is a bad album, it's just not particularly good either.  The album has some real gems on it--they're just buried underneath too many songs that shouldn't have made the final cut.  If this was an 8 or 9 song album instead of a 15 song album, I might have loved it.  In the end, it's just enough to keep me interested in whatever Manson decides to do next.

If you can hear this don't assume that I'm talking to ya
Yesterday everything I thought I believed in died but today is my birthday
Today is my birthday
I don't need you, I'll say it to myself
It doesn't mean I won't need somebody
Anyone with half a soul will hear this and will never leave me

If you don't know what forever feels like
I'll show you what it feels like with out it

This time I won't hesitate to kill to protect what I believe in
This time I won't hesitate to kill to protect what I believe in

I get by now I'm not really dead
but i really needed someone to save me
leaving me alone to die
is worse than having the guts to kill me

If you don't know what forever feels like
I'll show you what it feels like with out it
I'll show you what it feels like without it

This time I won't hesitate to kill to protect what I believe in
This time I won't hesitate to kill to protect what I believe in

Not letting you in
Won't satisfy me I'll teach you about loss

im sorry but ugghh. i have never liked mansons' material. It lacks all the emotion and power of Reznors' music. I'll admit I'm biased tho, I saw Reznor live and the power in his voice, coupled with his erratic/violent stage-presence was mind blowing.
I listened to the songs, they were ok.  The songs lack any good arrangement and his lyrics are weak. Nothing is above and beyond anything he has done in the past.
Manson needs to take a break and really dig to find his own "the downward spiral" if he wants to be remembered. Otherwise the only thing people will remember him for is being "that guy" that Reznor tried to teach. There are alot of comparisons to Reznor in here, but Manson is doing Reznors' sound half-assed. If he can't pick it up, he should move on to something easier for him.

NIN aren't that great.  They are decent, I enjoy them.  Trent has made a few awesome songs, but overall he is very forgettable to me.  That's all I can really say.

I don't really see anything similar in this album or any of Manson's work, other than those two albums that Reznor produced, to NIN... the Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar aren't even that good if you ask me.  It's all about Mechanical Animals and on from there.

WHAT?Huh? Nine inch nails are sooooo much better than manson. SO MUCH. Also, the last manson album sucked a giant dick. all the songs were like exactly the same, slow and boring, there was no change in pace for the whole thing. almost everything reznor has put out barring with teeth and year zero has been fantastic. The downward spiral is the best industrial album ever made bar none. it has perfect flow, the songs are all different, yet as an album it seems unified.

don't get me going or i will wall of text joooooooooo -.-

survivalism was a good song off year zero. not a great industrial rock song, but a good one.
