War has changed. It's no longer about Nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War - and its consumption of life - has become a well oiled machine. War has changed. - Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

On June 12, 2008 Hideo Kojima released the final chapter of the Metal Gear Solid universe. He wanted to wrap up loose ends, and go out with a bang. This is my review.

When I first set out to play this game I already knew that I would be getting into what would be a great game. There has yet to be a bad Metal Gear Solid game, and this is no exception. What I didn't expect was a game that from every facet, was perfect. I know that's a bold claim for anything, especially a video game where perfection is few and far between, but Kojima did just that. He took a great foundation, tinkered with a few things, and built on an already amazing series.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Review

Let me just say that FINALLY he has invented a flawless control scheme, where before it was the weak point of the game series. It's reinvented and it works so well. The over-the-shoulder view for combat is done well, and if that isn't to your liking you can do it in first person view as well. The Codec conversations, once dreadful and drawn out, are nearly out of the picture. Everything is captured in the beautifully done cut scenes and mission briefings.

The graphics are the best I have ever seen. Computer or console. Honestly, I never thought that a console could put out this type of quality. Simple shadows that would be normally omitted are there. For example, if a piece of paper is falling from the sky you will see the shadow rendered perfectly all the way to the ground. So much time and effort was put into every little detail and it shows, from Otacon's bad complexion, to Snakes wrinkles, it's all done so very well.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Review

One thing that MGS has always had was depth, not only to the story but also gameplay. The one thing that you will find about MGS4 is that you won't be let down by the possibilities to a situation. There is so many ways you can go about your business its incredible and unlike any game I have ever played. Even on the harder modes you are given just the right amount options to choose from whether you want to shoot up the place, sneak around, or let the freedom fighters that you have rescued fight for you while you sit back and enjoy the show, it's all left in your hands. This makes MGS4 the farthest from linear I have ever seen in an action game. Where other games claim to have this, MGS4 actually delivers.

So whats wrong with this game you might ask? Nothing, zero, nada. I'm sure you could pick some things out that might bother you like, the extremely long cut scenes (you do have a 90 minute one at the end), but I almost found myself hurrying the game play to get to these, and I enjoyed every second of them. You also might make the case that you couldn't play another character to possibly broaden the depth of the game more, but this is all about Snake in this one and there is no need. Honestly, I almost feel bad TRYING to find something wrong with this game, that's how strongly I feel about it.

As far as story goes? Well I won't go much into that, but let me just say I was so satisfied, I want to play the 25 hours worth of gameplay over and over again just to watch the story unfold again. This is a game you HAVE to play in order to truly enjoy this work of art. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a true masterpiece.

Good review, Chris.  I'm not sure that I'll ever get to play this since I don't own a PS3, and I've never played any of the other Metal Gear games, but I hear this is a good one.  The only problem I have with some of what you said is that there is no way in hell that looks better than Crysis, not in those screen shots or any that I have seen does it compare--but MGS4 still looks beautiful, no doubt about that.

I really am genuinely interested in this new metal gear game, though, mostly because the prospect of a 90 minute cutscene seems like it would be really cool, and I haven't been immersed in a game's story that much since the Max Payne series.  Half Life 2 was pretty damn close though.

Ummm...wow....

While I do not think the game is  a bad game... the game is in NO way perfect.  You said that you could not find a single flaw in it.  I will be happy to point out many when I finish the game.

Just as a little teaser to start a discussion though...

Ok, for those of you who have not played MGS before I will give you a quick idea of your main objectives throughout the game.

1.  Get from point A to point B without being seen, if possible.
2.  If not possible, silently eliminate any obstacles and continue.
3.  If seen, go in Rambo style guns blazing or retreat to a hiding spot until they lose you.   Then repeat step 1.

Anyway...last night I'm sneaking along.  I see a small bed in one of the rooms i'm sneaking through and I think to myself... "If I am seen, I will retreat back here and hide under this bed."  So I continue along and sure enough I brushed up against a shelf I shouldn't have and a bottle fell and alerted the guards to where I was.  They chase me back to the room with the bed in it.  The three of us are in the small room, they are standing right in front me.  I am trapped.  I'm laughing to myself because I know I'm fucked because they are already in the room and I haven't crawled under the bed yet to hide.  I'm being pelted with bullets...there is no way I'm getting out of here.  I go prone just for the hell of it and crawl under the bed.  The guards apparently are too fucking lazy to bend over and continue shooting me.  As soon as I made it under the bed HALF WAY, they stop shooting.  They say to eachother, "Where did he go?"  and they run off.

I was actually PISSED that I didn't die.  I fully expected them to throw a grenade under the bed or something cool but nothing happened.  To me, that is not a perfect game.

LOL wow, you know there were a few times that i wished that would have happend to me, it seems like no matter how much my camo rating is or where i hide if they have a hint to where i am they always seem to find me. are you playing it on easy mode though? cause that will make a huge difference on how the AI works. if you are playing on normal mode then thats just weird

yeah thats the normal mode.  i really didnt expect to give the game such a high review, and i also didnt expect it from gamespot or anyone else. like i said, i knew the game would be good, but i really was impressed. i also dont expect everyone to think so highly of the game as I nor have the same opinion

Like I said I don't think it's a bad game or anything I just can't believe everyone keeps talking about how "perfect" it is.  Gamespot, IGN, everyone seems to think its flawless but I have numerous complaints.

Your complaints are probably washed over because they have become "accepted" since pretty much every game has those same flaws, at least in my experience.  I'm not saying it should be accepted, but it is, generally.

This is pretty much the truth. honestly there is no such thing as TRUE perfection in anything, let alone video games. but from a standpoint of expectation and the fact that a game was created so well in so many ways, makes the word perfect stand out so.
