Heh, well you can do ripples with one button with a ripple filter, but it rarely looks how you would want ripples to look. Most of the time, in Photoshop, the filters are never used for what they describe. For instance, the "wave" filter doesn't usually actually make anything that looks like waves, but rather distorts the image and can be used for whatever purpose you see fit. The reverse is also true, i.e., the "noise" filter, in combination with adjusting black and white levels, is usually used to make a star field. While there is no "star field" filter, this is a widely known technique and one of the main uses for the noise filter, but not the only use. As for how you could make the ripples in this picture, you can either make them from scratch, or fade/blend/change existing source imagery-- I chose the latter because I was strapped for time. Changing the picture from Day to Night was a bitch and took like 2 hours. I'm glad though because this is probably one of the best wallpapers that I've ever done.

There are too many stars, you're right-- I forgot to brush out clusters of stars, which would make it more life-like, but that's the price of starting the work at so late and finishing even later, I suppose. I might retouch it someday. Retouched, edited the star pockets, tx dan. Also, DANIEL OMFG YOU POSTED I LOVE YOU POST MORE BECAUSE YOU ARE SECKZ!

Image > Adjustments > Shadows and Highlights, extensive layer overlays with many different options, blurring, filters, Image > Adjustments > Levels, Hue/Saturation changes... etc. etc. etc.
Changing the picture from Day to Night took about 2 hours and about 20 layers, probably. There isn't any one tool that you use to do that.
