In the last month I have been doing some internet exploring (woo myspace) and have discovered that there is a roaring underground metal scene in Calgary, we even have a local promoter called Scarab Productions. I am going to 3 concerts at community centers this month to see a bunch of quite good underground bands. I don't know if that many American cities have too much of an underground scene, but any semi big city in Canada seems to so I would assume so. Some examples of bands and local websites: http://www.albertametal.net/http://www.myspace.com/darkforestcan http://www.myspace.com/caveatsmusichttp://www.myspace.com/nebucadnezzerthere are about 10-15 different bands here in Calgary and they are almost always setting up new shows which I think will be a ton of fun to go to. So check out your local music scene, there is probably a wealth of good bands just waiting to be discovered!

When I lived in San Diego for a year I went to the Che Cafe ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_Cafe) for punk shows. Now I'm sad and old... and besides, the pits aren't the same anymore.

There's a pretty decent alternative/metal/techno/something band in my little town here (think nine inch nails crossed with say, marilyn manson) called Raine Vivian. google them (too lazy to do it myself), and keep in mind that the live versions are a fuckton more rock and more awesome than the recordings (or they were last time i checked them). Otherwise, this town pretty much sucks ass.

and add a dose of "local band suck". Not to say they aren't good, but hey, this is a smallish town, it only can do so much.
Oh, and i just listened to their most "popular" song again (it's called "True love: Dead as disco" or some shit), and god, they really are like 12 times better live because you don't have to listen to half ass studio work.
