There should be a test for everyone who needs to use a computer, and that test should be to build a copmuter. You learn a lot in the process, and it will keep stupid people off the Internet (Sorry mom). Then when someone calls you for family tech support and says "My CPU is broken" you know then when you cart your ass out there it's not the monitor or something completely unrelated.

They've also made putting together a PC on your own pretty much idiot proof now. The only couple of things I can think of that must be respected is:
 - Don't touch anything plated in gold with your fingers (Hold the component a different way)
 - Electricity bridges, so use appropriate spacers when mounting your motherboards (hex screws that another screw goes in the top of at grounding points or plastic offsets)
 - you can apply pressure, but nothing needs to be forced. If you feel you need to force, you're doing it wrong. Approach the situation from a different angle.

best tech support I have ever done was a friends mom when they first got cable internet. She asked us to help her figure out why she was getting so many pop ups. Within two minutes of being on the internet she gets all giddy and yells "SHOOT THE DUCK! I LOVE SHOOT THE DUCK!" and has shot the duck as we are yelling no in slow motion.

LOL i remember those ads. those ones where tempting. my moms computer went to shit after she found "a free stuff website". her computer hasn't got an infection since i explained the 'treat the internet like real life" virus analogy.
