My recent fascination with Linux made me think this was pretty interesting, so I thought I would share...

Wow, there are quite a few names that are surprising to see.  Although, I don't know much about Linux at all.

Linux runs on a lot of major servers, I thought everyone knew that already?  It's kind of neat to see that all in a list though.

Linux is cool beans-- I'm just not in any way sold on its superiority for the end-user at this point.  Someday, it might easily be good for us "normal folks" though.

The server side stuff is not what is interesting.  Yeah everybody knows that.

Its the other stuff like the ENTIRE COUNTRY of Georgia, that I find interesting.

I am definitely sold as it being amazing for end-user.  Superior?  No, not for the average user.  You can make an argument as it being far superior for anyone who considers themselves a "Poweruser".  If it could run all of my 3d games...including steam software... I would probably use it 100% of the time.

I would like to get your opinion on GIMP, Will.  It's Linux version of Adobe Photoshop and its supposed to be just as powerful.  Since I don't use photoshop I can't really make such a claim but that is what I have read.  I would be curious to see what you thought about it.

I have found Linux replacements for just about every software you could ever want except for Steam, Xfire, and the aforementioned games.  It is fun to work with, extremely powerful, and fun to learn and play.

Right, it's like Macs-- if it had no compatibility issues, it could hypothetically be just as useful / practical as a PC.  The problem is, they aren't compatible, so what's the point? Tongue

I haven't actually used GIMP much-- I tried it once, but that was like 2 years ago so I'm sure that it's much different by now.  I don't remember being impressed at all, though.

I'm saying that they aren't practical for the average end-user because they still aren't as compatible / standardized as they need to be.

I love open source, it's the future, but if you can't support standardized software, then you will not get a foothold in the market because your average user will not be interested.

I dun tink joo kno wut joo are sayin.  You can run just about any windows based application through Wine... I don't know what you mean by "standardized software".  The whole point of Linux is open-sourced non-standardized software.

There are really only two reasons why someone would choose Linux over Windows.  Financial reasons or a "bigger picture" decision to support open-source.

Exactly.

There is still a lot of stuff that doesn't run on Linux, and having a "Linux equivalent" doesn't count.

Why because the names are different?  They are usually as good or better because they are open-sourced and community supported.

You haven't used them to know though so I'm not sure why you would say it doesn't count.

Based on that train of thought, you haven't used them enough to know that they are in any way as good, so you aren't in any better of a position than I am to say that.  Your position is worse because you are arguing that an existing product is equal to or inferior to a free product, with no basis other than random claims.  I'm arguing that the existing and proven product is still superior.  I'm not required to prove anything because you aren't issuing any proof, and I'm arguing the existing state.

If GIMP were as good as or better than Photoshop, it would have already been widespread and taken a huge market share.  Think Firefox vs IE here.  It's pretty obvious that GIMP must still have several significant limitations, or everyone would be downloading GIMP for free instead of using Photoshop.

When I used GIMP, I was moderately impressed, but it wasn't intuitive and it had a vastly inferior layering system, among other things.  That was a while ago, so maybe they have made improvements, but Photoshop has also been improving the whole time, so I doubt that the story is much different.  I'd be willing to try it again, for kicks, and I would be very pleasantly surprised if it were "just as capable as Photoshop" in all the right ways... but I severely doubt that my assumption is wrong.

Again, I'm not saying "fuck GIMP, I hate it!", I think it's an awesome idea and great freeware that is far above par.  I'm saying that I doubt that it is rational to say that it replaces Photoshop.

The reason Linux isnt mainstream is Joe Dumbass Consumer doesnt know what it is (as hard as that is to imagine from our techie gamer viewpoint it is the truth). He just says "I love me some windows" "i love dell" "i spend money" that and game support. I seriously considered going w/o windows but I play games so I'm stuck with windows.
