i dont really think anyone is in the position to say what facebook should and should not be used for. thats just fucking dumb. it wasn't meant to be a source for a bunch of browser games, but tons of people only use it for that. it is what it is. stop pretending youre so much better than people just because you use it for "the intended" use, and only use it sparingly. gtfo and stfu with that.
I don't know if this is directed at me or someone else, but if it's at me then allow me to elaborate. Many people think that facebook is a private conversation between concenting parties and that privacy settings are effective. It's been proven time and time again that this is not true, no one is looking out for your privacy if you're not looking out for your own. People don't realize that they are posting on the Internet and whatever you put on the Internet is public forever. And that's not even considering how facebook as a company is selling your private information and bombarding you with directed advertisement. check http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/what_facebook_quizzes_know_about_you.php and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook_Beacon and then of course there's the fact that there reakless stance on privacy ("Privacy is dead" - Mark Zuckerburg) and lack of due diligence is illegal in several countries http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/canada-opens-new-facebook-privacy-inquiry/So from that, I'm going out on a limb and telling you all that facebook is not intended for private conversations. if anyone thinks facebook is secret, or private in anyway (w/o adjusting settings) then they are mistaken. agreed. Im not professing it to be the safe haven, nor do i really think people see it as a private corner of the web, i think they are just dumb about what they post because they dont comprehend the internet. Im not rolling around in some sort of facebook enduced orgasm, i just think people hate on it for stupid reasons. all things being equal (everyone understands that it is not "their" page with measures of security) facebook is no worse or better than phone calls, texting, email, im, ventrillo, etc, its just what it is.

on a related note, i hate when people use the Harvard comma. i dunno why but it pisses me off. also excessive use of metaphors doesn't make you a better writer, just pretentious lol. You know cuz i was reading the new yorker one time and it felt like i was in a giant bathtub and the water kept rising.....and i had a cup. THAT WATER WAS THEIR PRETENTIOUSNESS AND THAT CUP WAS MY CHANCE AT ESCAPE! lol sigh
what is the Harvard comma? its when people put a comma after the final "and" in a list of subjects. for example (without the H comma):jon, jane and mike went to the store. (now with the h comma): jon, jane, and mike went to the store. its supposed to help with clarifying subjects when the meaning isn't clear, but better sentence structure defeats the purpose of it in my mind. a better example would be like (without h comma)"I enjoy the toppings ketchup, relish, mustard and jelly and whip cream. (with the h comma) I enjoy the toppings ketchup, relish, mustard and jelly, and whip cream. (if differentiates the whip cream from the combo of mustard and jelly). Wikipedia it for more info lol

Of course you are wrong in this aspect. Facebook is like a bulletin board in grand central station, while all the other things you mention are like two cans connected by a string, some with federal laws protecting their decoding (anything celular) and encryption in place.

Facebook is soooooo much better than any other social networking site. Myspace and all that was always terrible and Facebook was such a breath of fresh air when it came out.
Obviously I am mostly opposed to such sites due to the stupidity that they yield (hence why I have my own website), but Facebook is the one site that I can tolerate. It's gotten worse in the last few months but that's mostly because everyone finally realized how much better it was and so more people are using it.
I have no problem with Facebook, some people are on it way too much, but that's their issue and they would do that on any site. I don't see how you can fault Facebook for it when it does such a great job of connecting people otherwise.

It's because at every opportunity, Mark Zuckerburg is trying to make a dime off every users back by tracking their use on and off the site, and selling their private information. How can you possibly be ok with that?

I have been using Facebook for years and I have had no influx of "advertisements" or spam or phonecalls or any other symptoms of my personal information being leaked.
