edit: To clarify, YES, quake 3 is awesome, yes, i enjoy it, yes, i'm sure everyone else does too, but quake live is still quake 3. If you liked it so much why weren't you playing it this entire time (for that matter, why wasn't everyone else). I love you Willypoo, but you always seem mighty quick to pick up on new current temporary most awesome best ever now i hate everything else things. No one was playing it before because FPS's have traditionally had crappy community support because of their terrible in game server browsers and lack of chat and friends lists, much less clan support, rankings, and awards. This is why Quake Live is amazing, because even today's shooters have STILL not accomplished that sense of community. It's awesome because it's a tried and true formula that is also tackling a huge issue that should have been fixed ages ago.

Meh. Honestly, the reason the Q3 engine is so awesome is because of the gameplay, and multiplayer. While people like oograx may find it repetitive and boring, many others find the gameplay a wonderful test of skill, and enjoy the challenge of improving themselves, endlessly, in the pursuit of victory. I like it for that a lot. The only other game I've become as obsessed about as anything based on the Q3 engine is BF2. I love that game. For the dogfighting. The BF2 engine has an incredible amount of bugs in it, but the way it's made really inhibits competitiveness in dogfighting. I'm a semi-badass at dogfighting, I guess maybe an international level of skill? I dunno. People put me in the top 20 list in this thread (doesn't mean I'm amazing, just means I love BF2 and play it to death ) : http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pid=2436462Anyway, the point is that the people who have been playing Q3 for 10 years do so because they love the competition. The 1v1 in Q3 is something that no other game has yet been able to produce. I've never seen a game with an engine and gameplay combined together to breed competitiveness like Quake does, and I suppose that's why I'm infatuated with it. Plus, new FPS's suck Except for stuff based on the Source engine. Valve usually rocks. But I can see the other side as well. id really BLOWS at making single player stories. Valve kicks that shit out of the water, even way back to the original Half-Life, which was based off of id's Quake engine. But, id is coming out with a new game called Rage. Looks pretty awesome, they're completely breaking the system they've always used for their franchises of Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake. I'm giddy about it. In addition to that, id got bought out by ZeniMax.

many others find the gameplay a wonderful test of skill, and enjoy the challenge of improving themselves, endlessly, in the pursuit of victory. This. I get that more out of Smash Brothers than Quake Live, but Quake is definitely my second most competitive game. The 1v1 in Q3 is something that no other game has yet been able to produce. I'll agree with this if you change "no other game" to "no other shooter" Let's not forget good fighting games Plus, new FPS's suck Smiley Except for stuff based on the Source engine. Valve usually rocks. I like this guy. Anyway, I think we can all agree with the fact that id has never been a company that any of us look to for original content and story. They are a tech company, they make the engine. They do the calculating and the processing, they tweak each piece, etc. Companies like Valve, Bethesda, and Rockstar have always been light years ahead in the storyline department. Personally I hadn't seen anything worthwhile from valve since the Q3 engine, until they made Quake Live... which is of course based on that engine. There's nothing wrong with going back to the well, but we all know how much of a disappointment Doom 3 and Quake 4 were. Indeed, the FPS genre has been stagnant for years it feels like. Where's AvP 2 quality multilayer? Where's Mechwarrior? ...oh wait they ARE making a new MW now! Honestly the only multiplayer FPS worthwhile right now is QL... I can only hope for the future for MW5 and AvP 3.

Oh sweet Arma 2, how will doesn't know what you are or how amazing it is to play you with a group of non retarded people.
But alas Arma 2, will probably wouldn't like you anyway, with your lack of strafe jumping and realistic bullet physics.
But seriously Arma 2 is the definition of multiplayer focused hardcore fps gaming, and the most adrenaline pumping balls out thrilling experience ever.

I have nothing against realistically themed games, Oograx. I loved DoD and I had a lot of fun with BF2 and BF2142. I have a problem with games that claim to be realistic but are really a shitty go-between of arcade and realism (counter strike). Yet again, you misinterpret me! <3 I've never played Arma 2, but I have heard things about it. I doubt it's as good as Quake but since I've never played it or even seen a video of it, all I can offer is hollow random predictions that have no basis on anything.

Meh. I played the demo for Arma. I was so incredibly excited about the game, about how large the levels were, possibilities for dogfighting and realistic combat seemed endless. Then, I tried the demo, and HOLY SHIT THE INTERFACE SUCKS BALLS! Jesus christ, it was completely retarded, from my experience. Even clunkier than America's Army (if you can believe that). Maybe I did something wrong? I dunno. I didn't like the idea of moving my mouse around the screen to turn my character. Helicopter controls drove me nuts, maybe I just did it all wrong and should take another try at it. Who knows. Honestly, my favorite game of all time is BF2. <3 the dogfighting in that game.

You were probably trying to play it like a regular shooter, it isn't a shooter. Think of it more as a hardcore combined arms combat simulator, flight simulator for the army as it were.
Also, DoD and Bf2/2142 are realistic? Laff. You ever had to use your tracers to aim at a target 400 yards away with your LMG because of bullet drop and wind to cover your leapfrogging squadmates in a desperate bid to save your squad leader who is bleeding out downrange in an enemy controlled city? You ever crept through the brush only to have your whole fire team be slaughtered in a blaze of light and sounds and blood? YOU CAN'T KNOW MAN, YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE.
Seriously, though, in like a large scale night battle watching the tracers and shit light up the screen as you squint at your monitor trying to decide whether that's a tree or a combatant through the green glow of your NVGs is as intense as it gets. And then you die, because he was to your right the whole time, and because of your inattention a gap opens in your field of cover and your whole squad dies too, mission failed.
There is no respawn.

That is completely unrealistic too, that sort of thing never happens in the real world anymore.

Dude. Where in my post did I say that BF2/2142 or COD were realistic? I NEVER said that. I don't think that. Seriously. If I thought that BF2 was realistic and that jet airplanes like the F35B VTOL, Mig-29, Su-30 and 34, F15, and F18 all stall at 800 altitude (meters), I'd be a fucking retard. I agree with you, 100%. They aren't realistic. I never said they were. End of discussion. You like realistic games, I don't. I respect that. I don't think the games I like are better than yours. I'm not trying to argue with you about anything.
