<< 5/20/09 >> You can now practice strafe jumping and view demos directly from the game browser by clicking "practice" and then "training center". There is a map for strafe jumping and a map for rocket jumping, and there are demos that you can watch of each map to show you how it is properly done.
This is the fastest way to move around in Quake Live. This is a bit different than simply bunny hopping as you might be used to in other games. You don't have to be as crazy as the guys in the videos to have this help your game, though. The simple concept is basically to switch between holding strafe left or strafe right in between jumps while turning your mouse slightly in the given direction, which builds momentum. The longer you do it, the farther and faster you go. Practice, practice, practice! Short Explanation, by Theat:

i have always had a great distaste for quake games, they have never been fun to me,
and im sorry, but that video is fucking retarded. I think its completely ridiculous that the strafe/jumping is even something you can do to that extent to move you that far of a distance. i know quake is not about realism (with the double jumps and stuff) but thats just stupid.
"hey everybody, lets turn our bodies 90 degrees to our destination while constantly moving AND WE'LL JUMP A FUCKING FOOTBALL FIELD!"

your animosity is unwarranted and foolish. you hate what you do not understand.
why is that retarded? it's fun, requires skill, and ads to the gameplay.
it's not any different conceptually than crouch-jumping in Half Life, or double jumping in Unreal Tournament, or wavedashing in smash Melee, or drift-driving in Mario Kart Double dash.
psssttt... your ignorance is showing!
at any rate-- it is unlikely if not impossible that in a match, a player would move as far or go as fast as the person in this video does. i can't think of a map that has a corridor that is 10 feet wide and 10,000 feet long like the map in this video. the map was made specifically to showcase how the physics of the technique work and no real maps are designed like that.

It's really not as bad as you say andy. It's part of the game that is not really that hard to learn but is necessary for some points of the game. It's like will says, the game isn't about LONG huge corridors that all you need it superb strafe jumping to be good. You actually strafe more like 3-7 times before having to stop for turns or to stop your momentum so you aren't as predictable. I vote you give it another shot with us sometime!

Hate to invoke the wrath of the proverbial bandwagon here, but i mean really, it's quake 3. Whoop de do.
The same game i played to fucking death in 1999 or god knows when, and really don't see a reason to give a rat's ass about now. I played for a bit when i got in to the beta however many months ago and enjoyed it for nostalgia reasons, but that's about it.
Yes, the delivery system is sweet and everything, but still.

I've never really played it so this was new for me. Sure it's old but it's really fun. Just because it's an older game shouldn't make it less interesting to you. Especially since all the new FPS's blow.

Source is good, but Quake Live is better than all of the Source games except the older DoD--even DoD has been fairly tarnished by dumb updates these days, though. They totally fucked up the rocket classes by screwing them over with no ammo capacity, and they removed some of the best guns that they had introduced pre-source, and the paratrooper missions too. DoD was way better before Source, no contest. I miss it quite a bit I loved that game. Just another game in the long list of games that have been ruined by stupid updates. As for Quake Live, I don't see how you can have "played too much of it", I dunno. Quake 3 was already a great game that never got old, and that replayability is still intact within Quake Live, but what makes it extremely awesome to the max is that the whole web-based browser thing WORKS by unifying the community and making it extremely easy to interact with people in and out of the game. This is something that no other fps has EVER done.

Why are you so in love with quake 3? Yeah, it's fun and stuff, but it gets repetitive since the game modes basically all play the same.
If someone would do a quake live esque system with, say, the original unreal tournament, i feel it would have a lot more staying power.

I'm in love with Quake 3 because the gameplay is flawless. Duh. It's the perfect example that a game with the basics done right is far better than a game with unnecessary dumb flashy stuff.
Quake 3 is really no more repetitive and no less innovative than any other FPS that has been released since it came out.
I prefer Quake to Unreal, personally. Always have. Although I do like UT, especially Double Domination... which is gone from UT3... which is gay... which makes UT3 suck.
I find the fact that you dislike Quake Live merely because it is old far more absurd than the fact that I like it despite its "oldness". How old the game is is a totally mute point. All that matters is if it is good or not.

I don't dislike the game, you're misunderstanding me, i just can't come to grips with the fact that you seem to think it's god's gift to pc gaming. I never imagined the most amazing gaming experience was an (admittedly awesome) 10 year old game that i've already played till boredom.
Yes, the delivery/browser system is awesome, etc, but I wish they had picked a game that isn't as repetitive like q3 to do it with.
Honestly, on the topic of browser based yada, i wish instead of battlefield heroes (which is fun, but not battlefield enough) they had done a browser BF1942.
edit: To clarify, YES, quake 3 is awesome, yes, i enjoy it, yes, i'm sure everyone else does too, but quake live is still quake 3. If you liked it so much why weren't you playing it this entire time (for that matter, why wasn't everyone else). I love you Willypoo, but you always seem mighty quick to pick up on new current temporary most awesome best ever now i hate everything else things.
