Are games not allowed to develop a unique control scheme for their game?

good post here gam, i agree on most all of it,
my biggest issue was the over abundance of qwiktime button mash scenes. running in the caves , uroboros, wesker fight, etc it felt over done and kind of lame after a while
this game has nothing on re4 other than the co-op. also i kind of miss the weapons dealer from 4 (if any of you played it) self explanatory he sold you guns.
spidey- ammo conservation is required or you are in a hoarde of zombies with no ammo oog- if your not playing co-op with another human, dont fucking waste your time
will- yea its not unique but its fun, but more importantly you have to not mind being only able to shoot/reload or run

I had played through RE4 a couple times due to the awesomeness of the frantic zombie action experience.(on the gamecube controller)
Recently I tried out the demo(on the ps3) and was really pissed at first. I couldn't remember which buttons did what and the control scheme did not feel intuitive.(but then again, this is the case for almost every console shooter when you first start playing). After hanging back from the action for about 5 minutes and trying out all the controls I was g2g and jumped into the action. Should you have to spend some time learning nonintuitive controls to enjoy a game? Hell no!!! Will I do this crappy step in order to fully enjoy the awesome story line combined with frenzied zombie panic that only RE games can provide? Hell yes!!!(I pretty much already have the control scheme down by playing the demo a couple times anyways.)
As far as button mashing combo's during cut scenes, I found that I really enjoyed those in RE4. They allowed your character to engage in precise, over the top sequences that you couldn't engage in given the games controls. (like indigo prophecy)
I'll end up asking for this game for a birthday or buy it if I find it much cheaper. Goddamn 60$.

Don't forget god of war! (action sequences out the ass)
I've only played the demo for force unleashed and it seemed like a lot of "evil jedi destroy everything" fun. I noticed on the commercial for it that through an action sequence you force lift an at-st(chicken walker) and then implode the damn thing into a ball of scrap metal. Death by force implosion = coolest force move ever.
Fun fact: That particular force move is why general grievous is all fucked up and coughing in episode 3. Samuel L. Jackson(he doesn't have a character name, its just samuel L jackson) force imploded the general as he was escaping and pretty much permanently ruined his shit. I think this was in the animated clone wars(the drawn one, not the CG one).

Aren't those technically called "quick time events"? and yeah, they were really fun in Indigo Prophecy

I think it was the relative randomness of the QTEs that pissed me off.
Half the levels you just get to watch a sweet story video and enjoy the graphics/crazy fights shown.
The other half you're enjoying the movie (I put my controlled down once or twice) THEN BOOM PRESS A RIGHT NOW O SHIT TOO LATE CHAIN TO THE FACE INSTA-DEATH.
The QTEs during fights (press X to not get hit for a lot) weren't so bad, because they weren't insta-lose. Instant death QTEs suck.

The problem (as covered by Yahtzee in Zero Punctuation review of the last Silent Hill game) is that the game industry is becoming like the movie industry and replacing subtle mind-fucking creepy "Japanese-style" horror with "American-style" ZOMG A MONSTER JUST JUMPED OUT AT ME"! And that is not nearly as scary. Granted that the former is much harder to do, but it is well worth it for the viewer/player. Hopefully the industry will swing back that way soon.

totally agree. the anticipation builds so much suspense that makes that style way more effective if you truly want to be on the edge of your seat and scared. I think Doom 3 had a good amount of the suspense but of course a lot of people whined about having to use the flashlight. The darkness, limited sight tunnel, and just knowing that there is something out there made that game good.

"/insert random creepy noise" oh man what's going to happen I wonder "/stop random creepy noise" oh nvm nothing's there. "/random jump out event occurs"
I'm so sick of seeing that or just the random creepy noise and something happening. It's so bad now that everyone pretty much predicts every "scary" scene. sigh
