Ok so today started like any other day.  Woke up went into work but then the day went to crap when i got into my office.

The storm last night took out power to the school for about 3-4 hours.  Our UPS ran out of juice after about 2 hours.  Everytime the power company tried to restore power it make the server boot up about 1/4 the way and crashed again.  So after checking out all my servers I notice that one of them can't ping anything, or access active directory.  I check out network connections in the control panel and it doesn't list either NIC.  After doing some checking of my own then calling Dell and doing the same things all over again Akmud is sending a guy out to replace the motherboard.

This is a major problem because we only have 2 decent servers that can run anything of significance and the server that is having issues is one of two domain controllers, Exchange server, Sharepoint server, Web server, DNS, DHCP, and it hosts a number of network folders.   So at the moment my entire network is being run by one domain controller that usually only runs our database but is now doing everything and only has 2gigs of ram.

There isn't much for me to do but wait around for the Dell guy to show up to replace my servers motherboard....hurray.

While twiddling your thumbs, you might want to research surge protectors for at least those two DCs. At least you had a hot failover...

Talk about all your eggs in one basket. You should seriously consider moving your exchange and sharepoint onto another box.  And what web server are you running on your DC? Is that just the portal for sharepoint, or is that like an actual Internet facing web server? Good god tell me it's not Internet facing...

oh yes, yes it is Internet facing.  our other servers are pretty old running server 2000 and have low system spec's.  we need at least 1 more i hope there is budget to get 2 new servers.

I have this really uber badass UPS that takes up about 1/2  the space in one of my racks.  We aren't using it yet  because it needs some type of step-down converter.

i've been workin here for about 3 weeks, putting out fires like the everyone group having full access to everyones mailboxes on the exchange server, people having domain admin status when they shouldn't, etc.  tbh i'm not sure exactly how the site is set up.  all i know is that the server hosts it.

Daaaaaamn. Looks like you're going to be a busy little bee. There's a little security rule of thumb that splits front end systems, application system, and database systems on different physical devices preferably separated by firewalls so that a single compromise can't bring down systems. In Windows shops that's scaled down to 2 systems as front end and application are often joined up, with the back layer being the system jewels (database and authentication servers).

This school sounds really small.. I'm amazed that they're hosting their own Internet website at all...

yeah i'm familiar with the front end / back end server setup but this is something that I don't think we have atm.  there are many things that I'm trying to fix.  so basically right now as long as its working it isn't a big concern because there are things that require more attention.

so the replaced the mobo and it didn't solve any issues looks like i'm going to have to reload the os, exchange, sharepoint and then do a restore.   idk this shit sucks balls! ugh...

Do you have backups that you can restore to a base image from? If not, make sure you take a snap shot before you sync with the other one to have a restore state in the future.

well redoing the backup process is something on my list of things to do.  as of now we only back up system state, the database, exchange and sharepoint.
