Digitimes is reporting this morning of the rumored release of AMD's dual GPU powered Radeon 4870 X2.  They say that AMD plans on releasing it by August according to their source at graphic card vendors.  They also rumor that the card will have a whopping 2GB of GDDR5 and cost around $499.   Shocked

Keep in mind though that while there is indeed 2GB of ram on the card that its actually 2GPU's with 1GB a peice in Crossfire.  Meaning that each card would only have 1GB of ram available to it, essentially making it a super-fast 1GB card.  Potential nVidia GTX 280 killer imho.

Where is AMD in the ability to offload CPU tasks to GPUs? I know they were talking about that a while ago and wonder if this card may provide that benefit or even if they're close to releasing that capability.

Good question-- nVidia is doing this very well with the 8800gtx and up, using their GPUs do to CPU processing for PhysX calculations.  Any news on this with AMD, Kolby?

I haven't really heard much about this from AMD, although like Mags said they have mentioned working on it.  I'll look into it more since there is obviously an interest.

In the meantime, here is an article I was reading earlier today that hits on this topic.
