Review: Audiosurf

One of the most unique, entertaining, colorful, awesome experiences ever, all for under $10.

Does that say enough for you?  Audiosurf is an amazing little game that allows you to "drive" down your own music.  You can select any song on your computer and all common song formats are supported (mp3, wma, etc).

Basically, the game simulates a futuristic super speedway, with turns and hills and traffic that all go off of the sound of your music.  The object of the game is to collect different colored blocks and match them in lines (think Tick Tac Toe meets Tetris).  The lines can be diagonal, horizontal, or they can be "clusters" which are just huge groups of blocks of the same color.  "Hot" colors offer more points than "cool" colors.

The musical highway, as it were, has lanes just like a normal highway, and as you drive down your music each lane can have any number of colored blocks in it.  This creates a need for high speed swerving and jumping lanes as you try to match the blocks to get as many points as you can.  When songs are mellow or slow, the "road" is up-hill, and when the music is harder/faster, the road shoots down-hill.

It's difficult to understand just how awesome this game really is without seeing it, so I've taken the liberty of capturing a video of a session while playing.  Granted, I'm a total noob at this game, it's very fun and I think you'll get the idea.

Here's a video of me playing Heretics and Killers by Protest the Hero:

You can try the game for free for 5 songs at http://www.audio-surf.com/ or, just download Valve's Steam client and download the demo from the Trail downloads section.  If you decide you like it (and how can't you?  It's your own music!), you can buy it for only $9.95.
